Whangamarino Redoubt

Located next to Te Teoteo’s Pā, a sentry pā, on a hill overlooking an important catchment area - the Whangamarino Redoubt was established after the occupation of the Pā.

It overlooks in abundant area, once home to various Maori and trading routes. It connects the Waikato, Maramarua and Whangamarino Rivers, various streams, as well as Lake Waikare and Lake Karaka (Kopuera).

Tāne Mahuta

Tāne Mahuta is New Zealand’s largest and oldest living Kauri Tree.

It is know as the God of the Forest and features in Maori mythology. It is estimated to be between 1250 and 2,500 years old and has a height of 45.2m.

Tāne Mahuta is accessible via a short track, which takes you under the canopy of the mighty Kauri tree.

Rangihoua Heritage Park and Marsden Cross

The Rangihoua Heritage Park is the home of the Marsden Cross memorial - commemorating the first Christmas Day celebration in New Zealand in 1814.

The service was led by Samuel Marsden and was attended by the first mission group in Aotearoa New Zealand as well as allegedly Maori under the leadership of Chief Ruatara.

Rangihoua Heritage Park was officially opened in December 2014, 200 years after that historic service.

Kororipo Pā at Kerkikeri

Kororipo Pā is set on the hills above the Kerikeri Inlet. Although very little remains today, it is possible to see its earth trenches and the walls from when the Pā would have been fortified in the 1770s.

It is located only 5 minutes from central Kerikeri, and from the Pā the Kerikeri Mission Station is clearly visible.

Kerikeri Mission Station

The Mission Station at Kerikeri is home to two of the oldest buildings in New Zealand, the Stone Store and Kemp House - built in 1932 and 1822 respectively.

Established in 1819 the Kerikeri Mission Station is one of the first places where Maori invited Pakeha to live with them, amongst them. The two historic buildings are located just below the Kororipo Pā site, which is visible from the mission.

Russel Kororāreka

Once called the “Hell Hole of the Pacific” historic Russell Kororareka represents various stages in the development of Aotearoa New Zealand as a nation, and also it’s pre-colonial past. Before European contact the area was one of the most populated in Aotearoa.

After European contact Russell Kororareka was developed as a shore station for shipping. The European population grew, with a mixture of deserting sailors and whalers, convicts, as well as settlers and traders.

After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi the settlement of Russell Kororareka became New Zealand’s first capital.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are located just north of Paihia, and are the sit where Maori chiefs and the British Crown signed Ti Tiriti O Waitangi on the 6th of February 1840.

Often called the “birthplace of the nation,” the Waitangi Treaty Grounds represent to many the start of a bi-cultural nation of New Zealand. The grounds are home to several buildings and sites of significance.

Te Tii Waitangi Marae

Te Tii Waitangi Marae is located north of the township of Paihia, directly next to the mouth of the Waitangi River, and below the Waitangi Treaty grounds.

Even before the opening of the building on site in 1881, the area was home to a Nikau building and the first parliament of the tribes of Ngapuhi.

Te Teoteo's Pā

Te Teoteo’s Pā is located on a hill overlooking an important catchment area. It is an old Pā located in an abundant area, once home to various Maori. It connects the Waikato, Maramarua and Whangamarino Rivers, various streams, as well as Lake Waikare and Lake Karaka (Kopuera). It is also the second largest swamp area in the North Island.

As a result it was a critically important Maori settlement - as its ecosystem was home to various fish and birdlife.

Pioneer Gun-Turret

The Pioneer Gun-Turret is located in Mercer, in what was once the Maori settlement known as Te Paina. The settlement was located on the Waikato river, and it was a agricultural cultivation area.

It is now the place of of a gun-turret from the river gunboat ‘Pioneer’ that was used to transport British troops and supplies down the Waikato river.

Atop the gun-turret now stands a World War I memorial.

Queen's Redoubt at Pokeno

The Queen’s Redoubt is located in what was once known as Pokino (now Pokeno) - a site of a Maori village and a place of trade.

The Redoubt represents one of the largest earth-walled fortifications that were built by the British forces during the New Zealand Land Wars. It was constructed just north of the Mangatāwhiri stream, a dividing. Line between settler Auckland and the land of the Maori King.

Rangiriri Pā

The site of a Pā and a decisive battle, Rangiriri was once a extensive cultivation area.

In the New Zealand Land Wars it became the second defensive line constructed by the Kingitanga forces to halt the advance of the British, and is the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Waikato War.
